Five Reasons to Take Your Time When Planning a Renovation
The new year is here, which means homeowners are making resolutions to finally tackle their renovation project goals and work toward their dream home in 2019.
With the inconveniences that often come with remodeling projects, homeowners may be tempted to rush the process so that they can quickly return to their normal lives. However, it's important to remember the long-term benefits of taking your time during the planning phases so you're not paying the price later.
Pary Flynn, owner of Exterior Therapy in Edwardsville, Illinois, and 20-year veteran in the industry, agrees.
“The thought of expediting the process is appealing to some homeowners so they can cut time and money in the moment, but that could cause big problems later down the road,” he says.
With this, here are the things that can happen if you don't spend time paying attention to the details during your renovation:
Choosing the Wrong Contractor
To get the ball rolling quickly, homeowners may make the mistake of hiring the first contractor they see with the most competitive price. To avoid long-term consequences, Flynn says, "My rule of thumb is to have at least three quotes before committing to a contractor. It's also always a good idea to check the licensing of a contractor, which you can easily find online."
Contractors Cutting Corners on Technique
Subsequently, working with the wrong contractor could lead to long-term consequences in terms of quality of work. Flynn goes on, "The wrong contractor could enlist in cheap labor to make a low price attractive to homeowners. However, that may mean they're cutting corners on technique to get the job done as quickly as possible to maximize their profit."
Faulty Building Materials
No one wants to complete a remodel only to do it all over again a few years later. Select durable, high-quality building materials from the get-go and avoid the future headache and cost repercussions. Flynn uses LP® SmartSide® Trim & Siding, noting that its durability, workability and attractiveness allows him to create quality builds for his clients.
Code Violations
Rushing a remodel without being up-to-speed on proper codes could lead to serious issues down the road. For example, Flynn calls out the danger of violating codes associated with housewrap installation prior to siding. Without following code, he notes, water and moisture could leak behind the siding, later filtering into the home and creating permanent damage.
Stress
Homeowners are often tempted to rush a renovation to mitigate the stress. Ironically, though, bypassing proper planning and attention to detail along the way will only lead to ongoing anxiety that could have been avoided if they took the time to plan it right.
