However, during construction there are helpful measures builders can take to ensure water drainage around windows and prevent future issues, such as a window leaking from the bottom sill. Let's take a look at a few ways to address moisture intrusion around windows and how LP WeatherLogic® Air & Water Barrier can help.
Common Problem Areas for Water Intrusion in a Home's Exterior
Water intrusion can happen anywhere there is a threshold between one product and another or a product and the ground, for example. One key area is windows, which must be sealed properly to prevent water damage. For example, at the window sill water damage is common because this area requires proper caulking, and caulk can crack and let in moisture over time.
If a window is leaking from the bottom sill, it may be caused by a rotted or warped window sill. When this happens the window's water drainage is compromised, and the water may cause degradation over time.
Water intrusion can also occur through improperly installed roofing, plumbing, attics, ceilings and even from extreme weather events.
How Can Water Intrusion Be Prevented?
Water coming in around windows can be prevented by following a few critical installation procedures. Here are a few ways to ensure proper window flashing techniques when using LP WeatherLogic panels:
Pan flashing: Install pan flashing with the recommended 6-inch Seam and Flashing Tape. Wrap the tape along the sill and at least 6 inches up the jambs. Cut overhanging tape along the folds up to the face of the panel, folding down. Then, install the window in accordance with manufacturer's instruction.
Flashing the window: Apply tape to both jamb flanges and across the head flange of the window. If a drip edge is installed at the head of the window, apply tape to seal the top of the drip edge so that it covers all fasteners.
Ensuring drainage with window sill construction: Proper window sill drainage starts with adequate caulking and sealing at all gaps. Follow manufacturer's instructions to be sure sealant will prevent water intrusion.

Using the LP WeatherLogic System for Moisture Management
LP WeatherLogic panels, Seam and Flashing Tape, and Water Screen work together to prevent water intrusion before it starts. With an integrated, water-resistive overlay, the panels provide permeability while allowing moisture to dry, and the tape creates a tight seal between panels, helping to achieve proper window flashing techniques. LP WeatherLogic Water Screen adds another layer of protection and peace of mind, helping to drain and channel excess water out of the wall assembly.
With this moisture management system proven to seal out moisture and air, you're one step closer to preventing water intrusion during construction and long after.
