Expert Predictions: Top 2020 Design Trends

Home design trends are everchanging, and it's oftentimes hard to stay on top of what's in and what's out. With 2020 just around the corner, what better time to dive into the top interior and exterior design predictions for next year as told by the experts themselves to ensure you're in the know?

Clean, Modern Designs

Giving us a sneak peek into 2020 is popular home décor and DIY design guru Liz Marie Galvan. Clean and modern are two buzzwords she uses to describe what you’ll see in the coming year. “For example, if you’re into chippy, distressed antique pieces, the trend is to pair them with modern items to achieve balance,” says Galvan.

Amy Pierce, Market Development Manager for LP Building Solutions, has seen the emphasis on clean, modern designs extend to the exterior too. According to Pierce during a mid-year look at 2019 exterior trends, the popularity of the Modern Farmhouse design has spiked recently—and it’s not expected to leave anytime soon. Pierce says homeowners are gravitating toward sleek, smooth finishes, a hallmark of the Modern Farmhouse design, which led to the introduction of LP® SmartSide® Smooth Trim & Siding in 2019 to answer the demand.

Touches of Metal

As another interior design trend, Galvan predicts metals will be making a big splash in 2020. Incorporating metals (i.e. gold, silver and steel) adds an interesting layer of texture and brightness—whether your style is modern, classic, eclectic or vintage. Add touches of metal in the form of water fixtures, mirrors, lamps, coffee tables, furniture legs and other accent pieces to subtlety achieve the look. This trend can also be incorporated into exterior design in the form of accent pieces on outdoor porches (think lanterns, flower boxes, etc.).

Focus on the Outdoors

A big trend for 2020 will be treating outdoor spaces as a true extension of the home, with a major contributor of this being the rise of working remotely. Specifically, working from home has become the standard for approximately half of the U.S. population. Homeowners are using their outdoors to answer the need for more space to work, relax and live year-round, including tactics like covering and enclosing outdoor porches and even using backyard sheds.

Matte Black Accents

One home trend Galvan is particularly excited about is matte black. "My favorite trend in 2019 and one that isn't going anywhere is matte black," says Galvan. "We have a lot of white in our home, but I love pairing matte black items-everything from furniture to small décor items-into our design."

Sarah Caperton, LP® SmartSide® Product Manager, is also seeing an increase in black with exterior home designs—especially those favoring a Modern Farmhouse aesthetic. “We’re seeing customers request white Modern Farmhouse designs and incorporating black siding in a board and batten look to achieve a sharp juxtaposition,” says Caperton. “Homeowners are also adding black accents, such as with window frames, window boxes and metal downspouts, as finishing touches.”

Painted Interior Front Doors

It’s no secret that a painted front door on your home’s exterior instantly boosts curb appeal and creates a warming first impression. However, 2020 is expected to see this trend make its ways indoors. Homeowners are painting the interior of their front doors with interesting pops of color to create an eye-catching focal point that complements the overall aesthetic. For example, paint a red door to modernize a traditional Farmhouse design or use black to offer a striking contrast to white walls.
