Five Things to Know Before Buying a Shed

You know you want a shed. Before you speak with a shed dealer about buying an outdoor structure, there are a few important factors to consider. Understanding how they influence your purchase will ensure you pick the shed that best meets your needs.
Local covenants. Many communities and neighborhoods have restrictive covenants that have a bearing on how you use your property. Common limitations include architectural design, exterior paint colors, types of siding, fences, landscaping and sheds, to name a few. There may be rules regarding the type and size of shed you can build, or how far it can be built from the property line. Check with your city or homeowner's association for specific requirements.
Shed purpose. Decide how your shed will be utilized. Will its primary purpose be a gardening and lawnmower storage shed, a workshop, a crafting room, a playhouse or something else? Do you need a shed with double doors for storing large equipment? What about customized storage racks or shelving? If you will be spending a lot of time in the shed, consider lighting, heating and ventilation needs also.
Shed size. Sheds are available in a wide range of sizes, from small doghouses to two-story detached garages. Before you buy a shed, the size selector tool can help you determine what size shed best fits your needs. However, keep in mind that your neighborhood may have covenants that limit the size of your shed.
Foundation requirements. The type of shed foundation you need will depend on where you live, the size of your shed and how it will be used. After you make these determinations, LP strongly suggests that you consult a shed dealer or hire a qualified building professional to construct a proper foundation for a shed.
Shed materials. Today's shed can be constructed with innovative materials like LP® SilverTech® radiant barrier products to keep your shed cooler, and SmartFinish® products which provide a uniform, professional-grade appearance. Engineered wood gives an attractive finished look to your shed.
