Pro Tips From LP For a Strong Build

LP® Structural Solutions products help you build better and stronger. To make our high-performance products even easier to install, here are a few Structural Solutions installation tips from pro contractors Jordan Smith of @jordansmithbuilds and Kyle Stumpenhorst of @rrbuildings:  

LP Legacy® Premium Sub-Flooring

  1. For added flooring stiffness, apply a narrow bead of glue in the groove profile before mating.
  2. We recommend a 1/8-inch gap at the panel ends. You may use an 8d nail at the panel ends as a gauge.
  3. Unless otherwise specified, install fasteners every 6 inches on center along the panel edges and every 12 inches on center along the intermediate supports. 

“We had a pretty wet winter and LP Legacy sub-flooring has had several weeks of very wet weather before we got it covered, but it has held up amazingly! Make sure you space the edges so the panel can expand without buckling, glue down with an ASTM D3498-rated glue, and fasten well,” said Smith.

LP® TechShield® Radiant Barrier

When installing panel clips, use the claw of your hammer to slightly pry the clip prongs apart to make it easier to accept the edge of the panels. 

  1. Stagger your panel ends to maximize the strength of the roofing.
  2. Use an 8d nail as a gauge to provide the required 1/8-inch expansion gap at the panel ends.
  3. Fasten the panels using 8d nails installed at 6 inches on center at the panel ends and at 12 inches on center along intermediate supports.

“It’s not often that I have to install sheathing on a 14/12 pitch roof! In fact, 12/12 is the steepest I have roofed before now,” says Stumpenhorst. “Toe boards are a must and a harness is necessary to keep you safe! The added benefit of this engineered OSB product is the factory-applied LP TechShield radiant barrier that will keep the sun’s radiation from penetrating into your attic space.”

 LP WeatherLogic® Air & Water Barrier

  • Installs just like regular OSB, so space all panel edges 1/8 of an inch. Then space the nails 6 inches on center along panel edges and 12 inches on center in the field of the panel, or in accordance with project specifications. 

“When it comes to tape, you can reposition it once if you are installing and have to redo it,” advises Smith. “Trust me when I say that stuff does not want to come off.”
